On Monday 14th November, the Year 6 Swallows went to visit the Landale Wilson Institute for the Anti-Bullying Workshop. The event was hosted by The Blue Apple Theatre group and Hampshire Police. The main focus was, ‘Hate Crime.’ Hate Crime is not about hating crime, it is about people who get treated in a harsh manner because they are different from you and I.
First, a gentleman from Hampshire Police gave a quick introduction about Hate Crime, and the Blue Apple Theatre group. Then, the show took place about when Hate Crime has taken place. In one scenario a teenage boy, named Bobby, moved into a flat to show his independence. However, things started playing up when his neighbour, Ross, started taking advantage because of Bobby’s disabilities. It started off by being offered a Kit Kat bar and ended up taking the lot! Later on, it became out of hand by Ross taking all of Bobby’s money! It was very surprising how it affected the year 6 children.
Later on in the afternoon, once we had all finished our lunch, we went outside to find two police men waiting there with their police car. Firstly they introduced themselves, then, asked us if we had any questions. There were many questions asked including one particularly strange question. Somebody wanted to be handcuffed, suddenly everybody decided they wanted to be cuffed too. After everybody had been handcuffed, the policemen asked us if we wanted to sit in the paranormal police car, and there were definitely no rejections! As soon as that was over Miss Stevens wanted a go and she enjoyed it a lot. The policemen carried many interesting things in their cars; cones, crow bars, a shovel and many other things. One of the buttons in the front of the car was used in all emergences. The siren! They never actually turned them on, only because the sound will alert all the other drivers, but, we did get to see the sapphire blue lights.
After that, two police women were waiting patiently inside for our presence. They were there to talk to us about Hate Crime. We knew (mainly) what Hate Crime was about, but our knowledge needed a bit of backing up. Next, we were asked if we knew about Arson; when people set alight to other people’s property on purpose. This is a very serious crime and this MUST be stopped. Lastly we tried on the uniforms that police wore, and had our picture taken. It was a very interesting trip.
